Childhood Park

Day 9 …

I got 99 problems and my car is one. Flat tire. Yay.

When was the last time you walked more than a few blocks outside of a shopping mall? To be honest, I can’t remember. And I also don’t remember that I enjoy them. If it’s a leisurely manner, walks are actually quite relaxing and nice. I had to take one today, to get to my car. On the way, I came across the park I used to run rampant in as a young child. It still pretty much looks the same, although I do believe the sign is new. As I slowly walked past it, my mind became flooded of memories growing up in this park. My cousins and I spent many days and evenings here and I’m glad I am able to remember some of them.

The metal slide is actually quite a high one. I remember climbing the stairs was always super scary and sliding down it was just as bad. I also remember having competitions of trying to run up the slippery slide. I’m pretty sure one of my cousins was finally able to do it. We have played every sport in the grassfield from soccer to baseball. My cousins used to always leave out the girls when they’d have basketball games. Jerks. And the swings, oh yes, the swings. Contests of who could swing up the highest yet secretly, we’re all kind of peeing in our pants because we’re scared of heights. And then swinging the swing around the top post so that it would wrap around and nobody would be able to use them. Jerks.

My favourite was the swimming pool. In the summer time, they’d fill up the concrete pool with freezing cold water that was probably so dirty and full of germs. As young kids, you couldn’t care less. I loved it. Being the only one out of my cousins who was in serious swimming lessons, I always had a ball on my own. I don’t even know if parks do that anymore.

One of my favourite memories was one day after school. Walking down the hill from school with my two cousins, we came across a stray dog. It was a pretty small dog, nothing super big or super small. Me being the self-proposed know-it-all and trying to be smooth, I told my cousins that if we stayed extremely still, it wouldn’t notice us and go away. Half way through finishing my sentence, I look up to see that my cousins were already half-way down the street, running and screaming. Feeling abandoned, I panicked. In my panic attack, I didn’t realize that the dog was at my feet and I had tripped over it trying to run away as well. Not so smooth fail.

My memory right now, especially short-term, is awful. I can’t even tell you what I did last week. But my long-term isn’t too terrible, especially when it comes to my childhood memories. If you have any, you should probably write record them before they begin to fade. It’s always so nice to look back and be able to tell your children or grand-children stories of what you were like when you were their age. Memories are precious things. Unlike almost everything else, they are the only things that will never change.
